RELATIVE CLAUSES: HOW TO JOIN SENTENCES

HOW TO JOIN SENTENCES WITH A RELATIVE


§  that = people, things/animals (Remember!: after comma you cannot use that)
§  who = people
§  which = things, animals
The 3 of them can be omitted if and only if:
1. There is not a comma.
2. They are not the subject of the relative clause.
§  where = place (here / there)
§  when / that = time expression
§  whose + NOUN = possession (possessive adjective…)



OMISSION OF THE RELATIVE


§  That / Who(m) / Which can be omitted if and only if:
    1.  There is not a comma.
2.   They are not the subject of the relative clause.
e.g.:
a) She is the woman who lives next door.
                                subject  verb = It cannot be omitted because it is the subject.
b) She is the woman (who) I told you about.
                                      object   subj. verb = It can be omitted because it is not the subject.
