CONDITIONAL SENTENCES


PROBABLE
(present / future)
Type 0: (general or scientific truths)
if/unless, etc. +  present simple /// present simple
ü  If you heat water, it boils.
Type 1:
if/unless, etc. +  present simple or present perfect s/c /// will/can/may + infinitive without to
ü  If you study, you will pass.
POSSIBLE
(present / future)
Type 2:
if/unless, etc. + past simple or past continuous /// would/could/might + infinitive without to
ü  If you studied, you would pass.
IMPOSSIBLE
(past)
Type 3:
if/unless, etc.+ past perfect simple/contin. /// would/could/might  + have + past participle
ü  If you had studied, you would have passed.

Mixed:
Normally, we combine type 2 and type 3 or type 3 and type 2:
ü  If you studied, you would have passed. (type 2 + type 3)
ü  If you had studied, you would be a graduate now. (type 3 + type 2)
