REPORTED SPEECH II (questions, commands, suggestions, warnings and advice)

2. HOW TO REPORT QUESTIONS
STEPS TO BE FOLLOWED
A. Wh- QUESTIONS:
1.asked/wondered/inquired/wanted to know…
2. wh- word
3. subject
4. verb (1 tense ï) = STATEMENT
“What time does the film start?” Sarah said. ð Sarah asked (1) what time (2) the film (3) started (4).
B. Wh- QUESTIONS:
1.asked/wondered/inquired…
2. if / whether (2 choices)
3. subject
4. verb (1 tense ï) = STATEMENT
“Have you had a good time?” he said to Joe. ð He asked Joe (1) if/whether (2) *he (3) had had (4) a good time.
* Change pronouns, possessive adjectives and time and place words when necessary.

3. HOW TO REPORT COMMANDS
STEPS TO BE FOLLOWED
- To report commands we use an introductory verb (told, ordered, instructed, asked…) followed by to + infinitive:

1. Normal orders = TOLD
"Be quiet!" the teacher said to us. ð The teacher told us to be quiet.
2. Strong orders (police, military…) = ORDERED
"Don’t move!" the police officer told him. ð The police officer ordered him not to move.
3. Polite orders (requests + favours) = ASKED

"Can you help me?" she said to Pete. ð She asked Pete to help *her.
"Set the table, please," she said to him. ð She asked him to set the table.
* Change pronouns, possessive adjectives and time and place words when necessary.
4. HOW TO REPORT SUGGESTIONS
STEPS TO BE FOLLOWED
- To report suggestions we use an introductory verb (suggested…) followed by:
Direct Speech
Reported Speech
- He said to us,…
“Let's go to the cinema.”
“Why don't we go to the cinema?”
“Shall we go to the cinema?”
“What about going to the cinema?”
“How about going to the cinema?”
“Do you fancy going to the cinema?”
“Do you feel like going to the cinema?”
- He suggested
going to the cinema.
our/us going to the cinema.
that we (should) go to the cinema.
to us going to the cinema. (not very frequent)
us to go to the cinema (incorrect answer!).


5. HOW TO REPORT WARNINGS AND ADVICE
STEPS TO BE FOLLOWED
- To report warnings we use an introductory verb (warned) followed by to + infinitive:

Reported Speech
- Mum told us…
“Don’t go near the edge of the cliff.”
“You’d better not go near the edge of the cliff.”
“Make sure you don’t go near the edge of the cliff.”
“Be careful not to go near the edge of the cliff.”
- Mum warned us…
not to go near the edge of the cliff.

- To report advice we use an introductory verb (advised) followed by to + infinitive:
- Dad said to me…
“You should take an umbrella.”
“If I were you, I would take an umbrella.”
“If I were in your shoes, I would take an umbrella.”
“I would take an umbrella.”
 “It might be a good idea to take an umbrella.”
- Dad advised me…
to take an umbrella.

*Note that: - advice = NOUN / - to advise = VERB.
